When you're ascending from your dive too fast, here's what you need to do to regain control.
Time Required: 1 minute
- Keep your airway open. Your lungs need to vent expanding air.
- Look up. You don't want to crash into any overhead obstacles such as a boat.
- Dump air from your BC immediately. Use your dump valve and/or the oral inflator.
- Slow your ascent. Flare your body during the last 30 feet by arching your back with your arms and legs outstretched (like a skydiver).
- Report the incident. Tell your buddy and the dive leader so that they can help you recognize signs of DCS.
DCS symptoms: numbness, tingling, visual perception problems, joint pain, and fatigue.
